About the author

SFC (Ret.) Daniel J. Stamaris Jr. was born on September 13, 1959, in Puyallup, WA. He is a dedicated husband to Heather, and he is also a father to Amber, Aaron, Abigail, Leah, and Melissa. A 1978 graduate of Lynnwood High School, Daniel earned a diploma in General Aviation Technologies from the Alabama Aviation & Technical College, where he was twice on the Dean’s list and once on the college president’s list. He also holds an FAA Airframe License.

SFC Stamaris enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1979, serving over 14 years until his disability retirement in 1994. During his military career, he completed numerous training courses, served in various positions, and was deployed on multiple tours, including Desert Shield/Storm. In 1991, SFC Stamaris was captured as a POW and held in Iraq for eight days before being liberated.

Throughout his military service, SFC Stamaris received numerous awards and commendations, such as the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, and Purple Heart. After retiring, he continued his career as a Department of the Army civilian, where he earned accolades, including the 2011 Fort Rucker Outstanding Employee of the Year with a Disability and the 2011 Ernest A. Young Logistics Achievement Award.

Outside of work, SFC Stamaris enjoys Bible study, football, camping, carpentry, history, fitness training, and motorsports. He has traveled extensively, visiting 42 U.S. states, 14 countries, and won the 1996 Mr. Dothan and Southern Cup Body Building Championships.

Today, SFC Stamaris shares his POW experiences with SERE students and various audiences, inspiring others with his resilience and dedication to service.
